What is Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)?
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as "Medigap", are private insurance plans which cover the costs of Original Medicare such as coinsurance/copays or deductibles. Each Medigap policy must follow both federal and state laws that are designed to protect you and provide transparency.
How to identify a Medigap plan
Medigap must be clearly identified as "Medicare Supplement Insurance". Insurance companies are only allowed to sell you a "standardized" policy that is identified in most states by letters, for example, "Plan F", or "Plan G". The goal of Medigap is help fill the "gaps" in Original Medicare (hence the name). This includes a variety of health care services and supply.
