How Medicare Advantage plans work
Medicare Advantage Plans are intended to reduce what you have to pay out-of-pocket for Medicare Part A, Part B, and potentially Part C benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by Medicare-approved private companies, who follow a specific set of standards set by Medicare. You need to use the health care providers included in your plan's network to guarantee the lowest cost. If out-of-network coverage is offered, it is normally at a higher cost to you. Conditions and benefits will be dependent on your plan.
Where to enroll in Medicare Advantage Plan
The initial enrollment period for Medicare Advantage Plans is within the last three months before you turn 65 and the first three months after. If you don't / haven't enrolled in this period, there are three options: the annual election period, the open enrollment period, a special election period. The annual election period (AEP) starts on October 15 each year, and runs until December 7 of that same year. Coverage for plans selected during the AEP begin on January 1 of the following year. The second option is open enrollment period. This runs from January 1 to March 31 of each year. During this period you can also switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan or return to Original Medicare. Finally, you may qualify for a special election period if you miss the initial enrollment or AEP. You need to speak to a licensed Medicare agent to see if you qualify for the special election period.
What Medicare Advantage Plans cover
